Vulnerability of intensively-exploited hard-rock aquifers to fluoride contamination in India: impact of global change
نویسندگان
چکیده
A geochemical study was conducted to obtain a comprehensive understanding of fluoride concentration increase in groundwater from a crystalline (hard-rock) aquifer in a small Indian agricultural watershed, where groundwater is intensively abstracted for paddy irrigation. A reactive1-D geochemical model using PHREEQC was used to reproduce fluoride concentrations under rice paddies taking into account evaporation and return flow related to paddies and water-rock interactions processes, namely dissolution of biotite, allanite and fluoro-apatite as well as absorption onto Al and Fe-hydroxides. This model can be applied to evaluate vulnerability to high fluoride concentration for several land use and climate change scenarios. ha l-0 06 08 56 4, v er si on 1 13 J ul 2 01 1 Author manuscript, published in "Colloque IGWC, MADURAI : India (2011)"

Hard rock aquifers for the purpose of this Paper mean the non-carbonate, fractured rock aquifers in the terrain covered by crystalline basement complex, metamorphic rocks and also by extensive effusive volcanic rocks like the basalts of western India (Deccan traps. Ground water development in hard rock aquifer areas has always played a secondary role compared to that in the areas having high-yi...
متن کاملA Regression-Based Analysis to Assess the Impact of Fluoride Reach River Water on the Groundwater Aquifer Adjacent to the River: A Case Study in Bharalu River Basin of Guwahati, India
Fluoride is one of the parameters which is non-degradable and naturally occurring inorganic anion found in many natural streams, lakes, and groundwater. Serious problems are faced in several parts of India due to the high consumption of fluoride through drinking water. These may cause dental and skeletal fluorosis to humans. This study aims to examine the level of fluoride in both Bharalu river...
